More than 56,000 students will be eligible for the state’s summer meal program, formally known as the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) for Children.

That’s good news for users, who according to a 2018 survey, unanimously reported that they valued and would like to see the return of the program that provides summer food benefits to recipients of free or reduced-price school lunches.

Flint Community Schools and Genesee Intermediate School District are among the 16 school districts have been approved for participation in the 2019 program.

The effort is supported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, in collaboration with Michigan Department of Education.

Each eligible student receives $30 per month, which can be used to purchase items such as milk, eggs, fresh fruits and veggies at WIC-authorized locations through August 31.

Recipients receive cards and program materials via mail and can immediately begin using benefits once they call in to the program’s 800 line and registers their Personal Identification Number (PIN).

School districts were selected based on recommendations from the USDA, the Michigan Department of Education and the WIC program, and focused on local access to food service programs in the area. Those areas without sufficient summer food service programs given the number of eligible students were prioritized for this summer.
