When it comes to securing resources that support local families and children Motherly Intercessions doesn’t mind scrambling.
At 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 4 the non-profit Flint youth advocacy organization will prove its devotion to the community by hosting the third annual “Unlock the Future Golf Scramble” at Sugarbush Golf Club in Davison.
Since 1999 the organization, founded by Flint youth advocate Shirley Cochran, has stood in a gap, addressing an often overlooked community need of support for Genesee County households impacted by incarceration.
In 2016 the nonprofit expanded its Reading and Counting to Success (RACS) program to build a stronger foundation for families rebounding from jail or prison by boosting youth literacy to help reduce their chances of imprisonment. The annual golf scramble’s proceeds are used to support RACS, which provides after-school tutoring for students who receive Motherly Intercessions’ support.
The vision for Motherly Intercession includes a long-term effort to sustain its programs that strengthen households challenged by separation between children and their moms or dads. From grandparents suddenly faced with raising grandchildren to fathers taking on household duties when a mother is jailed, various Flint residents find assistance through the organization’s various initiatives.
Cochran and Motherly Intercession supporters invite the entire community to tee off for a day of fun at the Golf Scramble, including for an 18-hole course and meeting new friends. Teams of four will compete to collectively advance through Sugarbush with the promise of a prize for the winners.
The $80 per golfer or $300 per team price includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and gifts for participants. Sponsorship opportunities that range from $100 to $350 and include exposure through signage and a newsletter are still available.
