Flint residents, religious leaders, business and community advocates are invited to unite next month.

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF) will celebrate “A Day of Racial Healing” Sept. 29, in support of its current 30th anniversary year theme of recognizing citizens in their common humanity.

Isaiah Oliver, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, says reaffirming common humanity is a goal of the organization’s event, “A Day of Racial Healing.”

“We invite community members to participate in healing conversations that help us understand the racial dynamics of our community,” says Isaiah Oliver, CFGF president and CEO. “In doing this work, we hope to heal and build sustainable progress, neighbor by neighbor, community by community, to transform the racial narrative in Flint.”

Workshops described as “healing circles” will be held at the Mott Community College Regional Technology Center, 1401 East Court St. in Flint. Registration is limited to 100 participants in a morning session from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The afternoon session will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch will be served to all participants at 12:30.

Guests should register online at http://www.cfgf.org/ no later than Monday, Sept. 10.

As part of “A Day of Racial Healing,” small groups will be guided in listening, becoming more open to other cultural and social perspectives, and allowing themselves to be transformed by the event, say CFGF organizers.

“Racial healing circles are experiences that engage an open and expansive heart,” Oliver says. “Through the healing circle process, we can acknowledge the unconscious bias that lives in all of us, and reaffirm our common humanity.”
